Our minds have the ability to convince us that something is impossible long before we give it our best effort. If we’re not careful, we can formulate a mental surrender that says, I cant do this. Ill never make it. Its not possible. Those who let themselves think this way are sure to fail because they stop trying to succeed. How can you make sure that your own mind doesnt get in the way of your dreams?

Everyone wants personal success and to learn the keys to success. Everyone wants to have a happy, healthy life, do meaningful work, enjoy a career, and achieve financial independence. Everyone wants to make a difference in the world, to be significant, to have a positive impact on those around him or her. Everyone wants to do something wonderful with his or her life.

Over and over, I have found that the keys to success are a single piece of information, a single idea at the right time, that can change your life in the right situation. I have also learned that the great truths are simple.

You have written down your specific goals and created a strong desire to achieve these. You must now find out what could be the possible roadblocks in your efforts/actions to achieve your goals. You will find that apart from outside reasons beyond your control, many of the problems have an origin in your own personality.

Improve your self-esteem and Understand Fear

Often we find that hesitation to take required action occurs because of fear of rejection. If any of your action concerns other person/persons, you may be fumbling to act because of fear. Fear that others will reject or disapprove your action. So the action is stopped before it begins. This is a serious roadblock which affects the progress of achieving your goals in almost all aspects that we have enumerated in my previous post. There are specific techniques of personality correction which we will discuss later in the following chapter. Let us first identify and define these impediments.

Of all the roadblocks in your progress, fear of rejection is the worst. It does not allow you to take any action that you may be ready to take. Inaction breeds utter lack of confidence. It reduces one’s ability to focus on the task ahead. As a result efficiency to do anything goes down. In turn there is loss of self-esteem. You consider yourself good for nothing. The question is how to overcome this devastating fear of rejection. Just consider the following words of wisdom to understand what you might be doing to yourself harboring this fear in your personality:

  • If you hold back your feelings because you are afraid of getting hurt, you will get hurt anyway.
  • Rejection doesn’t mean that you are not good enough. It means other person to whom you have made an offer has failed to understand the significance of your offer. It is never your loss.
  • A boy once proposed to a girl. She rejected. He was not sad. His friends asked him how were that he was not said. The boy replied, Why should I feel sad? I have not lost someone who loved me, but only one who didn’t. But she has lost someone who loved her!
  • Remember that everything you want is on the other side of fear.
  • Strength does not come from what you can do. Strength comes from overcoming the things that you once thought you could not do.
  • Just say to yourself that you want it more than you are afraid of.

Know Your Limits

There is a difference between obstacles and limits. Obstacles can be overcome, whereas limits cannot. For example, a blind person cannot drive a car. Real limits are few – obstacles are many. Knowing your limits will keep you from striving for the unachievable and ending up disappointed. Once you understand your limits, everything outside of them becomes a possibility.

Have a Plan

A good plan is the secret weapon for combating mental obstacles. When you have a plan and are determined to stick to it, it doesn’t matter what you are feeling at a given time because you can simply proceed as planned. Conversely, if you are plagued with negative thoughtsanda lack direction, its easy to become complacent.

Visualize Your Goals

Once you’ve spent so much time thinking about a goal that you can see it, touch it, taste it, and smell it with your minds eye, you wont easily give up on it. The desire to achieve it will give you the fortitude to overcome even the most daunting of obstacles. Before you ever become successful, you should already be successful in your mind. Doing this will convince you to push through any temporary pain you might experience on your way to achieving your dream.

Embrace Positivity

Stay away from people, places, and things that bring you down. Immerse yourself in as many up building activities as possible. Choose positive reading material and positive friends. Listen to the prodding of fellow optimists and ignore the criticism of pessimists.
