Mata Chintpurni is our kuldevi. For all important occasions like wedding in the family or ‘mundan’ (mundan is ritual when the child baby hair is shaven off) ceremonies, the parents and the children visit the kuldevi before or after the celebration. Just like in Haridwar another holy place, ‘kulpandits’ maintain the record of the visits of the members of the family.
i remember we had visited with my parents for the first time in the year 1945. The memory is faint but vivid. It was my ‘mundan’. The kulpandit had made arrangements for our stay in a room where we slept on hand woven mats on the floor. There were no beds or mattresses. Our Pandit had shown us the description of the visit of my grandfather’s father. i was a child then. Now i realize what a great feeling if you could see the signature of the person about two centuries ago representing a number of generations. Same thing happened when I went after my marriage or the ‘mundan’ ceremony of my son.
But during my last visit on fifth of this month i tried to find out our kulpandit. Surprisingly i was staying in the hotel which is owned by him. Besides, he owns another large hotel. It was good to know that our kulpandit had progressed a lot. However what i missed was looking at the description and signatures of our great, great grandfathers.
