Thought4TheDay (23.10.2017)

The core message of The Bhagavad Gita is that everyone should perform his/her duty to the best of ability. The singular dictum can regulate the life of the human being if the meaning of duty is properly understood.
The first duty of the individual is to his own self. He/she must ensure and take all possible steps to maintain good mental and physical health. It is not being selfish or self-centred. It’s developing ability to work in the service of the Lord Almighty. One has to contribute to the progress and growth of humanity as these efforts as to be construed as the true worship.
The next duty of the individuals is to work and establish their loyalty to the employer if you are working for someone. But if you are an entrepreneur, it’s your duty to do your best for the wellbeing and progress of your enterprise and the people who man your establishment.
It’s your duty to look after your family, your parents, spouse and children. All your work need to conform to the needs of the nation, state and community to which you belong.
Thought4TheDay (22.10.2017)

Lord Krishna said, “Arjuna, whenever religion suffers a setback and sins excel, I assume the form of a living being and appear before mankind.”
“I appear from time to time, for the help and progress of the virtuous and deserving people, and for the destruction of the wicked and sinners. Objective is to safeguard religion and righteousness.”
“My birth and my deeds are divine, pure and transcendental. The person who understands and realises this truth does not take birth after death. Instead, he assumes My form and becomes a part of Me.” History testifies that the pendulum oscillates between the good and the evil. But there is no specific rhythm. Be a witness to whatever is happening around. Expect the unexpected and remain calm and composed. It’s possible when we perform our duty stretching ourselves and covering an extra mile for the growth and progress of humanity.

Lord Almighty said,”I am present in all living beings, with uniform existence. No one is dear to me more than anyone else, nor do I hate anyone. But those who worship Me with love and devotion; they reside in Me and I live in their hearts.”
“Even if a dire sinner worships me sincerely, he is worthy of being known as a sage. I consider him as a decisive person, who has carefully realised that there is nothing as good as the worship of the Almighty.”
Again and again the Lord has repeated that He is present in everyone. So, what is the definition of worship? What does He mean when He says….”even if a dire sinner worships Almighty?” In fact, it is the realisation that working in the interest of humanity is the most significant devotion, one can offer. So, any endeavour dedicated to the service of humanity is nothing short of worship to the Lord Almighty. Surely, this message would give a direction to everyone about where to go and how to live?
Thought4TheDay(20.10.2017)
Arjuna asks Lord Krishna, “What are the qualities of a person who becomes ‘sthirbudhi’ who is steady and resolute? How does he speak? How does he sit? How does he walk?”
Lord Krishna: “Arjuna, when a person renounces all his desires;when he finds peace and solace in his own soul and remains satisfied; he is known to have acquired ‘sthirbudhi’. He becomes steady and resolute.”
“When a person is not disturbed by the onslaught of sorrow; when he no longer keenly desires tempting pleasures and when he has conquered attachment, fear and anger, he is known to have secured ‘sthirbudhi’.”
In the highly competitive, fast paced and disruptive world today, one needs ‘sthirbudhi’ more than ever before to be at peace and maintain work life balance in life. Please comment, add and share with friends.

Thought4TheDay (19.10.2019)
Lord Krishna says to Arjuna, “The person who has conquered his self, his senses and his body, and has given up all objects of worldly pleasures; such a person, without his dependence on hopes of any kind, can carry out his normal duties and perform all his work utilising his body and senses and yet remain free from sin of any kind.”
He accepts with joy whatever he receives, because he is not bound by his desire nor hankers after worldly objects. The person who has freed himself of ego, envy or jealousy of any kind, and who transcends the effects of pleasure or pain, remains calm and composed in success or failure. Such a person remains free from attachment. He continues to perform his duty with joy.”
When we understand and contemplate on these words of Lord Almighty, we find the futility of attachment with the result of our efforts. It does not mean that our efforts are affected by the lack of interest. It only means that we put our mind and soul in performance of our duty, without our anxiety about the results. We achieve the best what is possible. That is progress. That is growth. And, that is the real prosperity.
Thought4TheDay (18.10.2017)
Lord Krishna says, ” Arjuna, the ignorant people do not understand My prime attribute and consider Me like other ordinary human beings. Even though I attain the human form and wander amongst worldly life, I do so only for the benefit of human society. Yet they inadvertently consider Me the Almighty, as any other common human being.”
“These people are engaged in futile actions and nurture unproductive knowledge. In fact, these are the people who have limited intellect and assume ‘rakshasi’, ‘asuri’ or ‘ Mohini’ Prakriti’ (lower category of human character).”
“But Arjuna, the great souls assume ‘devi’ Prakriti (divine nature) and they understand Me as the endless cause of all living beings. They consider Me alone as the immortal and beyond destruction. They worship Me whole heartedly.”
It’s only when we realise the presence of Lord Almighty in all things and everywhere that we maintain the right path. We are not lost in bewilderment which abounds in this illusionary world. We realise our significance of life and we contribute to the progress and growth of human society.

Thought4TheDay (17.10.2017)

Lord Krishna says, “Arjuna, I am the pure smell of the earth, the heat and energy of fire, life in all living beings, and the devotion and penance of all seekers.” “I am the immortal seed of life on Earth. I am the wisdom of the wise and I am the divinity of the divine.”
“I am the power and the ability, without attachment or ego of the powerful. In all living beings, the presence of Kama or the sexual desire as laid down in the scriptures is also Me.”
The power and force behind all progress is the embodiment of the Lord Almighty. Therefore, excellence in any worldly activity is not possible without His grace. This knowledge inspires us to pursue perfection in performance of our duty, as the force behind the pursuit is also created by Him. All achievements, material or spiritual, realised in an effort for the upliftment of the society and growth of human values constitute our service and devotion to the Lord Almighty. Thus, there is no time to loose.
Thought4TheDay (16.10.2017)

The Lord Almighty says, “Arjuna, once you understand the advice given to you by the wise, you will no longer get into the fits of attachment and emotions. You will first understand yourself and then observe My presence in everything, everywhere.” “Even if you are a sinner, you will cross over the sea of sins with the help of the boat created by knowledge and wisdom. All your sins will die out.”
“Because, Arjuna, just as the raging fire burns away the entire fuel, the fire of wisdom will burn away all your ill actions and the effects thereof.”
That is the importance and result of pursuit of knowledge and imbibing wisdom in your being. If we look back, each one of us may have been involved in such actions as our conscience would not have allowed, but emotions were too strong to be stopped by the conscience. So, what is the remedy? The strong desire for the pursuit of knowledge and perseverance to acquire it. Propagating knowledge is the best service to humanity, the Lord Almighty.

Thought4TheDay (15.10.2017)
There are innumerable benefits of reading The Bhagavad Gita daily. The most significant of these is that it inspires us to love our jobs. We get committed to performance of our duty.
Today, let’s recall what great people throughout the world have said about The Bhagavad Gita, and also how the thoughts propounded in the great book of knowledge are reflected in what these great men say and/or do:
Albert Einstein: “When I read the Bhagavad Gita and reflect about how Good created this universe everything else seems so superfluous.”
Aldous Huxley: ” The Bhagavad Gita is the most systematic statement of spiritual evolution of endowing value to mankind…” Comments of others as below:
Thought4TheDay (14.10.2017)
Benefits of reading The Bhagavad Gita Yesterday, I had talked about the first two benefits: that it enhances courage and that we are inspired to pursue knowledge. Now, further:
3. Listening Skills. The entire dialogue between the Lord Almighty and Arjuna makes us understand the importance of listening skills. Most people, today, listen to reply. In the process the moment we find that we strongly differ from what the speaker has said, we stop listening and further. We wait for him/her to stop so that we can express ourselves and prove how wrong they are and how right is the opinion we hold. We find from the great book of knowledge that Arjuna is ignorant of many things which are explained to him. But he carefully listens and then asks such questions which are most relevant for properly understanding what has been said. Many management Gurus rightly say that importance of listening cannot be exaggerated.
2. Emotional Intelligence. The reading helps develop our emotional intelligence. In the beginning of the book, we find that Arjuna is very in this vital human quality. That’s why he tells Lord Krishna that he will not fight. But as the dialogue proceeds, we find Arjuna’s emotional intelligence develop. (to be continued)

There are many benefits that we can draw from reading The Bhagavad Gita daily. On one side it grants us knowledge, so very important to live life significantly, on the other, we become capable to face ups and downs of life. To my mind, the following benefits are very significant for human personality.

  1. The reading develops courage. In the first chapter, we find that Arjuna is tormented with grief and feels so weak that he cannot even hold his bow and arrow. In life, whenever one faces such highly emotional situations, unless you are in control, you tend to become weak. But Lord Krishna helps Arjuna to control his emotions and not loose his valour for which he is known. Since the Lord Almighty is always with us, we must never loose our courage and deal with the difficulties upfront.
  2. Importance of pursuit of knowledge for all human beings is both the explicit and implicit message of the great book of knowledge. We never know enough. Anyone who looses quest for knowledge, in fact, looses interest in life. It becomes a burden, whereas, actually it’s a unique gift. (to be continued)

Thought4TheDay (12.10.017)

Lord Krishna said, “The person who remembers Me even at the time of his life and leaves the body while remembering Me, in fact, attains Me undoubtedly”.
“At the end of the human life, whichever aspect is remembered by the dying man, he assumes the same form in the next birth. The simple reason for this is that he remained with that particular aspect throughout his life”.
Performance of one’s duty without selfish motive constitutes the work which is dedicated to the Lord Almighty. Because there is no selfish motive; such actions contribute to the development of society. It’s for the benefit and progress of humanity.
Any ethical enterprise which meets the human needs and helps the human development or the society at large is recommended. Greed and lust for power should not be allowed to replace the genuine effort for growth. These are not even good even for the entrepreneur as greed has no limits and lust for power is never satisfied. Both lead to disastrous results.

Thought4TheDay (11.10.2017)
Yesterday, we had seen that according to The Bhagavad Gita the three inherent Gunas or tendencies that determine our actions are: satava, Rajas & tamas. We had also observed how ea ch of these manifests itself in our activities. The first thing that we must do is to understand that at any moment which of these three gunas it tendencies are dominant. Tamas should not be allowed to become me prominent in any case.
Our goals, when these are to achieve some worldly possessions will require conscious, committed actions which we must perform as a duty if we seriously want to achieve our goals. Since these gunas or tendencies are never mutually exclusive, we need to ensure that along with our commitment to following the plan of action, we need to take care that the attributes of satava are always present in our hard-work for any achievement.
Our realistic goals will also give us satisfaction in the highly competitive world today; satisfaction of working for the growing needs of our family members. Besides, they r more likely to adopt our path and the togetherness will bring peace in the family. In any case, materialistic goals should never be allowed to turn into greed.
Thought4TheDay (10.10.2017)
According to The Bhagavad Gita, our actions are triggered and happen due to three categories of the ‘gunas’ or inherant tendencies. These tendencies and their attributes are as under:

  1. Satava which augments quest for knowledge. One starts pursuit of understanding life, accepting as it is. Wisdom is gained to devote time and effort to do our duty for the growth and progress of society. One is happy with himself/herself and lives a significant life peacefully.
  2. Rajas makes one ambitious. Such endeavors are undertaken which may win worldly possessions, power and reputation. One wants to dominate others, and become an authority. Hyper activity, being in a hurry pervades the life. Excitement over achievements and anguish over failures rule life.
  3. Tamas makes one lazy, inactive and inert. He/she loses interest in life and languish listlessly; loss of any initiative, wasteful activities come to the fore. The person procrastinates on everything. It’s almost getting into hibernation without any need and/or possible benefits. In short, one loses self-esteem altogether and becomes good for nothing. Thought4TheDay (09.10.2017)

The dialogue between the Lord Almighty, Krishna, and Arjuna sets an example of perfect communication. Krishna tries to explain meaning of life, importance of understanding one’s duty and devotedly performing the same in simple language. However, due to complexity of the subject, Arjuna is not able to grasp and assimilate many things. In such situations, even knowing fully well that Krishna is God Almighty, Arjuna questions the Ideas propounded by the Lord. He does not accept everything without understanding, without talking about his personal difficulties in respect of views, advice or direction.
Their frank and free dialogue teaches us the importance of assertiveness. Assertiveness, among other things, also means that never say ‘yes’ if you need or want to say ‘no’. But we must know how to say ‘no’. By and large people hesitate in doing so. The result is that either they slog and suffer or they prove themselves to be unreliable. Lack of ability to be assertive on the part of the employees and unclear and poor communications cause immense loss to the organisations. At home this inadequacy plays havoc in the family relationships.
Thought4The Day (08.10.2017)

Lord Krishna said, “I had imparted knowledge about the traditional yoga to the sun Lord Surya. He had communicated the same to his son Vivasvan Manu who in turn taught the same to his son Ikshvaku”.
” In this manner descending from the old traditions, this yoga became known to the kings and the saints. But after that, for a long time, this yoga had gone to the oblivion and vanished from the earth…..you are my disciple, my devotee and my dear friend. Therefore, I have explained the yoga (knowledge) to you.”
Arjun asked the Lord how is it possible when He is born now, whereas Surya was born ages ago. Then, Lord Krishna explains about the repetitive births of the soul and that while He remembers, Arjuna does not, as the later is an ordinary human being.”
We observe that Arjuna asks Lord the Almighty anything that he doesn’t understand without any hesitation. But, today, we commoners hesitate to ask questions to the Gurus and our bosses even when we do not understand. This results in fallacious knowledge and the consequent avoidable problems.

Thought4TheDay (07.10.2017)

In literature, verisimilitude denotes semblance of reality. Great authors are adept in creating verisimilitude to heighten the effect of storytelling.
The fact is that this reality itself is an illusion- maya created by the Almighty. In this illusory world, people become bound by this maya. They keep on playing their roles without realising what they are up to, without stopping to think, who am I, what I am doing or what is my goal.
Therefore, knowledge is given such an elevated status. Knowledge enables you to see through this maya. Knowledge brings the realisation that accumulating worldly possessions is of little gain if the person has to trade his personal peace to achieve these.
The knowledgeable know this deeply. He/she carries out their duty in an unattached fashion and lives life accordingly. But the knowledgeable is advised by the Almighty Himself not to disrupt people of lesser wisdom who remain engaged in performance of their duty for material gains.
Nevertheless, they too contribute to the growth of human society, humanity at large.
Thought4TheDay (06.10.2017)

There are certain wrong impressions about the core message of The Bhagavad Gita. It’s often believed that according to the great book of knowledge an individual has the obligation to perform his duty. But he or she has no right over the fruit or the result of their efforts. It’s a myth. When you perform your duty wholeheartedly, the results are bound to be good, and these are all yours. The core message of The Bhagavad Gita is that we should not be attached with the results. We should not keep on looking at the desired fruits of our efforts.
Things don’t happen the way we have planned. When we keep expecting the fruit or fulfilling of the personal interests, the quality of our efforts will be affected. In fact, that is shortsightedness. It leads to, or is the root cause of corruption. We start taking shortcuts. We want to become rich overnight. One thing leads to another. Greed grows. The final result is disastrous.
Making efforts as your duty demands, without attachment, would mean that we remain unperturbed because of the on the job rebuffs. We will keep following the right path. Achievement will surely come in proper time. So, a feeling that we have no right over the fruits of efforts is fallacious.

The knowledgeable and the wise understands that our significance in this life is best served if we serve the Almighty, the Super soul incorporating the entire humanity selflessly. This service is the greatest form of worship. No rituals are required for the service of mankind. All that is needed is performance of one’s duty which is dedicated to the upliftment of those who are suffering and who need help. Some people, who strive to work hard to get the rewards of their efforts in achieving what they want in the form of worldly possessions, they get them. But these are transient, perishable, because all these are left behind when we depart and leave this body.
The wise does not get attached. All achievement are made for the progress of society. There is no doubt that nothing worthwhile is achieved without contributions from the other members of the society.
The worst is suffered by the person of tamasik nature, when the person hates to work. Laziness, procrastination and indecision leading to inaction produce guilt in the mind and the concerned one suffers.
” Duty first, always in mind, greater joy you will never find.”
Thought4TheDay (04.10.2017)
Lord Krishna says, “Hidden amidst My yoga maya (illusion), I am not visible to everyone. Therefore, ordinary people are not in a position to realise My presence everywhere. I am birth less and immortal unlike common human beings”. “Whoever has lived and whatever has happened in the past, I know it all. I know about the present and the future. But whoever is not My true devotee will never understand Me, realise Me”.
“Born out of desire and envy, people get pleasure or pain. These are the ones who are enamoured by My maya and remain in their own ignorant world. They are not the seekers of truth. They remain devoid of knowledge”.
Quest for knowledge is the first step towards self realisation. Who am I? What am I doing? what is my significance? What is the purpose of my life? When you contemplate on these pertinent perennial questions, your anxiety, worry or stress of any kind is bound to vanish. You start understanding life. You realise that life does not offer poetic justice. You start accepting life as it is and become a person at peace with self.
